About the Opportunity

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a General Contracting Estimator / Commercial Estimator to join our team in Fremont, CA on a permanent, full-time basis. This is a hybrid role, but fully remote (within California) is available for the right candidate. Some travel is required.

This role comes with the unique opportunity to redefine, own, and innovate estimating at Bjork Construction. As our new General Contracting Estimator / Commercial Estimator, you will support our team by providing accurate project cost estimates, managing communications with internal and external project stakeholders, and maintaining a database for suppliers and costs.

As a General Contracting Estimator, you will be responsible for delivering estimates for a number of assigned projects. Your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Analyzing plans and specifications with a technical eye and knowledge of current construction practices
  • Interfacing with General Superintendent, Project Managers, support teams, and external vendors as needed to achieve thorough estimates
  • Producing detailed cost takeoffs using estimating software, with a clear understanding of project scope and client needs
  • Considering raw material, labor, equipment, tools, insurance, transportation, and operations logistics, to create accurate estimates
  • Conducting client meetings, performing site inspections, preparing tender packages, and managing the bid lifecycle, ensuring all deadlines are met
  • Managing RFIs with clear communication between subtrades and consultants, ensuring project scope is accurately defined, documented, and quoted
  • Communicating with all stakeholders throughout lifetime of project, including the client, subcontractors, and Bjork Management and Staff
  • Organizing and reviewing all vendor/subcontractor quotes, ensuring competitiveness
  • Participating in value engineering process, offering alternates and looking for cost-saving opportunities to meet client's budget while maintaining quality
  • Ensuring all insurance requirements and applicable permits are processed accordingly
  • Preparing cover letters and bid proposal, including cost breakdown, clarifications, and scopes of project
  • Providing budgeting set up for SAGE input and providing proposal breakdown to the Project Manager and other applicable team members
  • Reviewing contracts and making recommendations and adjustments as required
  • Actively seeking out new project opportunities through outreach to clients by attending networking events, lunches, office visits, or phone/video conversations
  • Innovating Bjork's estimating process utilizing new technology to create more efficiencies

About You

In order to qualify for this role, you will need a minimum of 7-10 years of experience in construction, including at least 5 years of experience as an estimator working for a general contractor or as a commercial estimator

As our ideal candidate, you will also join us with:

  • Valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle (mileage will be covered)
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of construction (technology, LEED building, equipment, materials, engineering, estimating, scheduling, and safety)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with applicable software programs (Construction Takeoff, Plangrid, Autodesk Build, Procore, etc)
  • Experience in multifamily, new builds, tenant improvements, commercial, and mixed-use construction
  • BA in construction, engineering, or education/certifications in a related field (asset)

You have superior communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to create and nurture relationships with people at all levels, inside and outside the organization. You are self-motivated and organized, able to work independently in multiple projects at the same time while prioritizing tasks with competing deadlines. Furthermore, you are an excellent negotiator with experience in contract preparation and negotiation.
